Tenerife has always had a reputation for a scintillating nightlife but it's also a world-class destination for clubbers of a different kind. With nine glorious courses and unrivalled climatic conditions, golf has become big business on the island of eternal spring.

Each course has a unique character that blends in with its natural surroundings. Seve Ballesteros-designed Buenavista Golf makes full use of the natural curves and volcanic features of its rugged shoreline, while in the lush north, dazzling tropical flora emblazons the fairways of the Real Club de Golf de Tenerife Spain's second oldest golf course.

The sport's biggest names have long been associated with Tenerife golf. Famous course designer, Donald Steel styled the spectacular Amarilla Golf and Country Club. He's the man to blame for the challenging 5th hole, requiring a nerve-wracking drive straight over the waves.

Right next door you'll find Golf del Sur, a 27-hole course that played host to the first Tenerife Ladies Open in 2002.

The wide fairways of the Golf Costa Adeje course saw some of the best players in the world tee-off during the 2003 European PGA tour, a huge success for both the golfing world and for the island. Stunning images of the mountainous back.

Also in the sunny south are Golf Las Americas and Abama Golf. Both are immaculate courses with exotic gardens and on-course views of the neighbouring island of La Gomera.

Golf is more than just a sport in Tenerife, it's part of the scenery, a patchwork of green oases woven into the island's startlingly dramatic landscape. And with more courses planned, the stage is set for Tenerife to develop into a golf destination to rival the best.
